South East Marts – Hailsham Market
Primestock report for:

WEDNESDAY, 4th MARCH 2009

CATTLE (33) Auctioneer: Roger Waters
Rock solid trade once again but just not enough – regular vendors Mark & John Cornwell’s young suckler bred Limousin heifer is top call at 172.5p and they sell four more cattle to average over £1,000, but the total gross return this week goes to Mr. & Mrs. Hesselgrave’s Charolais-x heavyweight steer clocking up £1,274. Best of the steers to John & Mary Jones’ Limousin cross at 169p and good to see native bred South Devons, pre-movement tested, from Paul Collinson at 159p. Well bred first quality Continental cross steers and heifers easily command 160/170p but are difficlut to find.

SHEEP (865) - Auctioneer: Nick Young Start 11.15 prompt

HOGGETS (624) Overall average 169.6p per kg.
To coin a phrase from one market customer today - our sheep trade was “as hot as hell”! No one who was there could surely disagree £80 plus was the order of the day. After nearly 30 years the auctioneer seems to be getting it right at last, long may it continue. We would, however, add a note of caution - how long can it continue!

HAILSHAM FARMERS' PRODUCE & CRAFT MARKET
On SATURDAY, 14th MARCH
Held On Second Saturday In Every Month
9.00 ~ 12.30 At Hailsham Cattle Market
Farmers’ Markets are a great place to browse and buy during this recession, and Hailsham Farmers’ Market is no exception. There are great bargains to be had both with our producers and also in our Craft section. We are all feeling the effects of the economic downturn, and it is so important to support local traders.
We are pleased to be promoting “Farm Stay” brochures helping the farming community to boost their income by offering bed and breakfast, holiday cottages and caravan sites all over Great Britain at very competitive prices. Come along and pick up your free copy.
Just a reminder that we will be holding our usual Easter Bonnet competition at our April Farmers Market.
Market cafe open from 8.00 a.m.
