The best price in the UK today was at Hailsham just ask anyone who was there. The weak pound and strong euro has helped as well as the freeze and a definite shortage. It is so crucial to get these lambs right, especially with the big price. Let us know what you have.
Sincere apologies for the frozen weighbridge this week - therefore no prices per kilo on offer, but look at these prices per head!

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE LIVESTOCK AUCTIONEERS ASSOCIATION
Prime lamb numbers sold through livestock auction markets rise by 27.8% in one year. The latest AHDB annual market throughput statistics clearly show that farmers are returning to the live auction ring to sell their prime cattle and prime sheep in unprecedented numbers. In ‘08 some 6.9 million prime lambs were sold through livestock auction markets in GB, which compares to 5.4 million in ‘07, an increase of 27.8% on the year.
The new season SQQ lamb price was 130.50p per kg, which was 28% higher, compared with ‘07. Old season SQQ lamb averaged 126.32p per kg, 16% above the previous years levels.
In ‘08 some 1.8 million cull ewes were sold through livestock auction markets in GB, which compares to 1.5 million in ‘07, an increase of 20% on the year. The overall cull ewe average price in ‘08 was £32.96 per head, £4.35 higher in comparison with ‘07. In ‘08 some 370,000 head of finished cattle were sold through livestock auction markets in GB, which compares to 369,000 in ‘07. AHDB estimates that the overall GB finished cattle slaughtering were down by 5.5% in ‘08.
The overall steer average in ‘08 was 144p per kg, 29% up on the year with heifers averaging 146p per kg, 28% above ‘07 levels. Young bulls averaged 141p per kg, 30% up on the year. 170,000 cull cows were sold through live auction marts in ‘08 to average 91p per kg, 40% higher than the ‘07 average.
Chris Dodds, Executive Secretary of The Livestock Auctioneers Association says “these statistics are even better than I had predicted. They clearly tell us that farmers in GB see the auction mart system as a vital tool to their marketing options, with the live ring being their only available forum where live, open, transparent and competitive trade can all be brought together in one place. Competition is the cornerstone to our industry and livestock markets are undoubtedly here to stay. It is my opinion that the live ring has been a price setter rather than a price taker over the last 12 months and farmers are always keen to follow and support a marketplace that continually offers strong competitive bidding for their products. As more farmers return to live ring selling it offers purchasers more of an assurance that they can selectively source the correct quantity of stock that their slaughter contracts are demanding.”
