South East Marts – Hailsham Market
Primestock report for:
WEDNESDAY, 10th MARCH 2010
CATTLE (35) Auctioneer: Roger Waters
Marginally better - more interest in the best - keener buyer inquiry - once again the Limousin bred cattle lead and others follow. Dick Bradford on behalf of St. Georges Retreat have steers to 156p per kilo and Jonathon Moseley has heifers to 155p, just a penny behind. Keep them coming.

COWS & OVERAGE BEEF (16) Auctioneer: Roger Waters
Disappointing numbers considering the recent trade at Hailsham - demand remains rock solid - no good Continental cross cows on offer - best of the Natives to
MJ & ML McCubbine’s Hereford cross at 111p, medium quality Sussex 91p, steaking Friesians 103p. Overage beef - little alteration, demand good - MF & JC Cornwell’s Limousin cross heifer 136p, RH Daltry’s Angus cross steer 121p and heifer 119p.
CALVES (16) Auctioneer: Roger Waters
Supply just not enough for the demand and another explosive trade at Hailsham.
No high flying calves at high flying prices but all calves on offer an excellent trade. Clearwater Farms’ Blonde cross bull £212 and heifers £166, £165 and £162, Brian Ashby’s Sussex cross bull £199. Friesian bull £70, Angus cross heifer £130, Reared Monbeliarde cross bulls £295 and not forgetting the ‘little white bull’ - Tilgate’s White Park £220.
PIGS (34) Auctioneer: Roger Waters
Pleasing to see continuing support in numbers and buyers in the big pens.
Mr. Todhunter’s white Hybrid in-pig gilts, as advertised, smart pigs, smart price £210. White Lop gilts 80p per kilo, cull sows to £115, heavy feeding pigs looking good value at £28 per head, white crossbred runners £10.
SHEEP (1426) Auctioneer: Nick Young
HOGGETS (616) Overall average 170.1p per kilo
A two tier trade. Fed and meated sheep a tremendous trade as the results prove. Underfed, non meated sheep met an only moderate trade.
The facts speak for themselves. Make them meat and send them in.
Leading prices per kg:- FP Russell Farms 192.7p, 178.1p, 177.8p, R Ponsford 189.3p, D Miles 188.6p, SJ Carr 188.1p, AC Ellett 187.8p, HH Visser 183.7p, JN Carr Farms 182.9p, AR Lavender 182p, J Nicholls 181.2p, PJ Greenaway 180.3p, DE Walker 179.5p, RH Smith 178.3p
Leading prices per head:- O’Neill Smith Ltd £103.50, £92, £85 (twice), AR Lavender £88, £83, RH Smith £87 (twice), £84, SJ Carr £86, £84, FP Russell Farms £85.50,
AL Ainslie £84.50, £84, J Goodman £84, GE Jarvis £83
EWES (99)
A real humdinger with prices beyond anyones expectations. The trade is here and now don’t delay get your ewes to Hailsham and reap the rewards. RH Smith £110, £92.50, F Grantham £95, £81, FW & MJ Akehurst £92, KJ Farnfield £90, A Pannell £89, DW Reed £87, £73.50, D Miles £79, J Forster £74, £72, DE Walker £72
STORE LAMBS (382)
The best were a real trade, in particular Richard Ponsford’s ewe lambs - to quote one follower “they must be the dearest in the country”. Two new buyers from Kent in attendance. Undoubtedly the smaller less bred stores look good value to feed on. Our advice remains constant, the rewards are there, keep buying and selling as many times as possible during this period and certainly before the milk lambs put an end to it. R Ponsford’s Lleyn ewe lambs £75 (twice), £68 (twice), R & D Marten £64.50,
JD Goodman £59.50, S Edmond £57.50 (twice), RFF Brown £57.50 (twice),
DJ Funnell £56.50, HH Visser £56, RG Whyman £56, I Williams £55.50, J Nicholls £55, FP Russell Farms £55.
Don’t delay get your sheep to Hailsham and benefit from this trade.

SHEEP TAGS - EID
Tagging this year’s lamb crop - Keep all your options open
Do not restrict your marketing opportunities
South East Marts recommend producers to use a Single Electronic Tag or Full EID if you intend to retain ewe lambs for future breeding either to be sold or kept as flock replacements. Sheep tagged with a single electronic tag will ensure you get maximum competition for your lambs in the market place.
Non Electronic tags will not give the option of further fattening, further sorting for defined outlets and will restrict your marketing opportunities.
We believe the benefits gained by sheep producers who tag with a single electronic tag, and the sheep industry generally, will far outweigh the small additional cost
- keep all your options open
All Store lambs will need to have a single electronic tag.
