Back in the auction ring, all working well. Derek Southouse on the leader board, one, two, three homebred Limousin cross steers 117p, 116.5p & 115p, spirited competition for all on offer but returns need to be better to warrant the fattening costs. All well bred Continentals over and just under the £1 per kilo. Better finished, better shaped 105/115p. Sending cattle next week - please let us know.

Successful trading in the auction ring with older beef and cull cows. No top grade cows on offer - the best good fleshed cows 55p/62.5p. Neville Gould’s Montbeliarde at 62.5p, Friesians to 59.5p, Charolais cross to 58p. Steaking cows 38/50p. Lean plainer sorts 25/35p. Older beef - selection of all breeds, mostly lean or overfinished heavyweights. Will Rydon’s Angus cross 77p, Sussex steer 70p, Hereford heifer 73p. Cull cows and older beef next week ? Bigger numbers and customers to buy them - no great demand but all sold realistically. Angus cross calves dominate - young small/medium bulls £54, £46, £41, £41, £40, etc., heifers £36, £36, £30. Reared Angus cross bulls, 14 weeks £165, Shorthorn bulls £18, Friesian Holstein bulls £17.

Last week we thought we were off to the races a real lift in the price and a definite air of optimisum and this week back to reality! The poor trade on Tuesday did not bode well for today but we did our best and nothing more can be said. They must be meated - stores sell best in the store section.
