Primestock report for:

CATTLE (24) Auctioneer: Roger Waters

Many steers £1,000 plus and some over £1,100. Trade flying along - top flight
vendors Derek Southouse and Graham Beck have homebred suckler bred
steers 171p and 170p. Adrian Scott’s Bazadaise x Friesian is 168p. Best of
the heifers to Graham Beck again at 170p. Good to see young Christopher Appleton, beef fattener of the future, selling Belgian Blue cross heifer at 167p. All very satisfactory except the supply, but the demand is excellent. Support this live bullish market and thank you to those that do.

CULL COWS & OTM CATTLE (24)

All weights, all breeds - Charolais bull 1150 kg., twelve year old Jerseys 380 kg. and a very good selling trade for all. Well fleshed Simmental cross beef cows 120p twice, good shaped Friesians 118.5p, other Friesian Holsteins 106p and 102p, lean steaking black and whites to 90p - the run of better Jersey cows 80p, 76.5p, 76p, etc. and the Jersey bull 90p, not forgetting the heavyweight Charolais bull grossing £1,069.00. Very few over age beef and trade follows the good trend. Andrew Firrell’s Sussex cross heifer 134p.

CALVES (31) Auctioneer: Roger Waters

Better numbers forward and the better bred the calf the better the price. Ridgewoood Farms’ bulls - Limousin x Friesian £180, Angus x Friesian £170 and Sussex x Friesian £145. Thakeham Farms’ Blonde x Friesian bull £165 and heifers £145 and £142. Reared Angus x CI stirk bulls to £140 and heifers £120. Holstein Friesians to £105.

PIGS (41)

Pig pens double as sheep pens but pigs have their day as well with nineteen pens in use. Crawley Borough Farm’s well reared British Lop stores to £32.50 and Gloucester Old Spots £31.50. Coloured cutter entires to 75p per kilo and a good run of cull sows £150, £140, £130, etc. per head. Bringing pigs on Wednesday let us know - only a phone call away.

SHEEP (1439) - Auctioneer: Nick Young Start 11.15 prompt

We’ve never seen as many sheep in Hailsham, every square inch of concrete had a sheep on it. As a rule of thumb proper finished hoggets are upwards of £80, proper ewes upwards of £70 and proper store lambs upwards of £60.

HOGGETS (507) Overall average 165.5p per kg.

Surprising though it may seem, nothing like enough for the level of demand. Good meated hoggets are in short supply and very expensive to boot. We strongly recommend you make them good meat and bring them to Hailsham and watch the three Davids, one Stephen and one Christopher fight it out.
Leading prices per kg. CA Lee & Sons 187.3p, 180.8p, 179.6p, 175.3p,

AA & M Woolgar 175.6p, DR & TA Gorringe 175p, Mrs EM Serpell 175p,
P Gorringe 174.5p.

EWES (287)

A rip roaring entry and a trade to match. Surely nowhere is as dear as Hailsham for ewes, the figures speak for themselves. JR Seale £90, R & W Brown £87.50, £77,
RG Whyman £84.50, DP Ellis £84, AA & M Woolgar £77, L Anderson £73.

STORE LAMBS (645)

A really powerful entry, we believe in real terms that some stores are dearer than finished hoggets. The art is to buy the ones that aren’t. There is money to be made whether selling or buying. It is recommended that you do not miss the trade. Please remember nothing is forever.

Heathfield & District Agricultural Show News
Everything on Schedule for the 2009 Show

Schedules for the 2009 Heathfield Show, to be held on Saturday, 23rd May, are now available. Anyone wishing to take part in Livestock or Horse classes can download a copy of the Schedule for all competitions via the Heathfield Show website or copies are available at the market. Alternatively copies can be obtained direct form the Show secretary, The Moorings, Pages Hill, Heathfield, East Sussex TN21 0UU. Please send a 52p s.a.e.
The introduction of a Pig section at the ‘08 show was deemed to be a success so these will once again be run in ‘09 with the addition of 3 extra classes and two Young Handler classes in this section. The cattle show will have a wide range of classes representing dairy and beef breeds inc. Ayrshire, Holstein, Channel Island, Dexter, Herefords, Sussex, British Limousin and British Charolais and Open Beef classes. There will also be Young Handlers’ in the Cattle section again this year. This Show is an important event in the Horse world and it holds qualifier classes for many of the countries top equestrian events. The Sheep Show also continues this year with a full complement of classes for many breeds with this year’s Henry Noakes trophy this year being awarded in the Sheep section to a handler under 16 years of age for an animal being shown in a sheep class in ‘09. “We encourage entries in these classes. The young people are the future of farming in Britain and will ensure the continuation of the farming industry and the provision of ‘safe food’ in the south east into the next century”
In recognition of this SEEDA will once again be sponsoring many of these
classes at the 2009 show.
