South East Marts – Hailsham Market
Primestock report for:
WEDNESDAY, 21st JULY 2010

PRIME CATTLE (15)- Auctioneer: Roger Waters
Few more cattle, a little more interest. Dick Bradford on behalf of St. Georges Retreat has two Limousin cross heifers both at 150p - quality to rely on.
Best of the steers two Limousins again both at 149p and offered by Brian Foster.
Heavyweight Limousin cross heifers to 138p and young Simmental bulls to 129.5p.

COWS & OVERAGE BEEF (25) Auctioneer: Roger Waters
Not the sparkle of a month or two ago, more plain wet bagged cows on offer. Best of the Beef cross cows - Piemontese cross at 105p and 101p, well fleshed Friesians to 93.5p, plain Holstein cows straight from the parlour 60p, 57p, 56p, 55.5p, etc.
Overage steers and heifers hold their own - keen competition. Belgian Blue cross heavyweight steers to 114p, Hereford cross heifers 107.5p, Friesian Holstein steers with weight 105p.

CALVES (10) Auctioneer: Roger Waters
Short in numbers for the time of the year. Nearly all Aberdeen Angus cross and under four weeks - bull calves £172, £137, etc., heifer calves £105, £90, etc.

PIGS (36) Auctioneer: Roger Waters
Pigs keep coming, sows and weaners. Bob Peter’s bright crossbred blue stores £36, others at £29, £27 and £24.50. Sows to £150 per head and 54p per kilo.

SHEEP (929) - Auctioneer:Nick Young
LAMBS (610) Overall average 155.8p per kilo
To quote the words of the song “Thats just the way it is, somethings will never change” (Nick Young favourite recorded by Bruce Hornsby and The Range in 1986!!) Best meated lambs not a problem at all they have gone dearer and thats a fact. Plainer and undermeated sorts incredibly hard work. Hailsham is certainly no worse than anywhere else and in many cases far better. Favourites Gordon Gribble, Christine Howe and Doug Reed, all lead the way this week.
Leading prices per kg:- Miss C Howe 176.1p, 165.9p, DW Reed 174.4p, 169.7p, 163.1p, 156.8p, Freshfield Mill Farm 169.2p, 161.9p, Ashdown & General 161.3p, 156.4p, FG Coles 159.7p, GN & J West 159.7p, 158.5p, JRV Wheatland 158.8p, 158p, CS Cooper 157.1p
Leading prices per head:- G W Gribble £76.50, Miss C Howe £75,
DW Reed £75 (twice), £74.50, £68.50 (twice), Miss C Howe £70, Ashdown & General £69.50, £69, JRV Wheatland £69.50, The Norton Farm P’ship £69, £68, FG Coles £69, RJ Miles £68, CA Powell £68

HOGGETS
An amazing go. A Mathews £62 (108.8p), £54 (106.7p).

EWES (295)
Yet again a veritable ‘Clash of the Titans’, as the big men battle it out. Mind you there were some superb ewes to get to grips with. Eastlands Farm £81.00, £79, £75, £73, £72, The Norton Farm P’ship £76, £75 (twice), IH & FC Field LLP £76, £74 (twice), Miss RE Hinton £76, P Baker £72, R Gorringe £72, Tutts Barn Farm £71

STORE SHEEP (24)
Too few to judge, we want your stores at Hailsham for our many customers home and away. Undoubtedly they will be short and very expensive, bearing in mind it is only the south east which is suffering so badly from this terrible drought. R Castle £50, Miss RE Hinton £45, RE & PM Mobsby £44

Next Wednesday, 28th July

SHEEP TAGS - EID
Tagging this year’s lamb crop - Keep all your options open
Do not restrict your marketing opportunities
South East Marts recommend producers to use a Single Electronic Tag or Full EID if you intend to retain ewe lambs for future breeding either to be sold or kept as flock replacements. Sheep tagged with a single electronic tag will ensure you get maximum competition for your lambs in the market place. Non Electronic tags will not give the option of further fattening, further sorting for defined outlets and will restrict your marketing opportunities. We believe the benefits gained by sheep producers who tag with a single electronic tag, and the sheep industry generally, will far outweigh the small additional cost - keep all your options open
All Store lambs will need to have a single electronic tag.
