An abundance of potential customers around the ringside - nothing like enough to satisfy demand in all cattle departments. John & Mary Jones still flying high serving double top with their heavyweight homebred Limousin steers 170p and 168p, both grossing £1100 plus. Julian Mockford’s medium weight homebred Simmental cross steer a creditable 159p. Best of the heifers - Sid Harris’ Limousin cross at 153p.

COWS & OVERAGE BEEF (20) Auctioneer: Roger Waters
More buyers present once again lifting demand and trade up a gear or even two. No first quality beef cows on offer. Heavyweight Belgian Blue cross 110p, Simmental cross 108p, Angus cross 103p. Best of the Friesian Holsteins - Phil Hook’s 105p, lean Holstein steakers to 91p and black and whites to feed on at 87p.
Overage beef - Blue chip demand - M & T Bourner’s Limousin cross heifer 144.5p, John Ayre’s heavyweight Limousin x Holstein heifer 134.5p and Ben Baynes’ Belgian Blue cross heifer 128p - more needed.

CALVES (35)

Another good entry of calves again well received - British Blue cross bulls £225, £210, £180, £170, etc. and likewise smaller heifers £160, £130. Simmental x Holstein bull £160 and heifers £130 and £122. Sussex cross heifer to £110, Holstein bulls to £50, Crossbred Friesian bulls to £130 at 5 weeks. Reared Friesian Holsteins £160 at 12/14 weeks and £140 at 8 weeks.

Little alteration in demand. Coloured cutter weight gilts to 64p per kilo and entires to 50p, all look good value. White Maiden gilts to £72 per head, medium weight Large Black sows to £81, Berkshire working boar £110.

With Hailsham’s numbers at this level we must be doing something right. A better trade despite the easing national price, but many heavyweight lambs on offer pulling back the overall average price per kilo. Nonetheless a good days trading to a top of 210.5p from Luke Colbourne/Armada Farms.
