South East Marts – Hailsham Market

Primestock report for:

WEDNESDAY, 30th JUNE 2010

CATTLE (13)                                                  Auctioneer:  Roger Waters

Numbers short again, little alteration to demand, loyal followers Jim and Nick Geering have their homebred Limousin cross steers to 160p and 156p.

Andrew Firrell’s crossbred Sussex to 139.5p.     Looking short again for next week - keep in touch.

COWS & OVERAGE BEEF (20)                      Auctioneer:  Roger Waters

Mostly a dairy event with the entry dominated by black and whites - heavyweight Friesian Holsteins, second grade cows to 97p, others 91p, 92p, & 90p.  Plain cows to feed on to 80p.  Best of the beef cross, lean medium weight Belgian Blue crosses to 109p and Sussex x Friesian 101p.

Overage beef, good interest once again, Chris Berry’s steers to 122.5p and nearly £900 per head.

CALVES (15)                                                        Auctioneer:  Roger Waters

Limited in numbers and mostly native bred calves on offer.  Brian Ashby’s Sussex x Friesian bulls to £177 and £169 and Messrs. Pitts’ Belgian Blue cross £180.  Holstein bulls look good value at 24/30 weeks - £175.

PIGS (19)                                                                           Auctioneer:  Roger Waters

The pig trade is good, customers a plenty for the four pens of store pigs on offer, Saddleback gilts £47 and £38 and Saddleback entires £37 & £34.  Heavyweight sows to feed £125 and coloured sows to feed on £85.  Entered for next week - 12 white crossbred store pigs.

SHEEP (580)                                                    Auctioneer: Nick Young

LAMBS (486)                                                                 Overall average 148p per kilo

Again the national and other centres were back for the third week running!!  We all know the trade is not clever, however, there were some very comforting prices obtained today, in particular Christine Howe’s superb Texels and predictably FG Coles’ superb breeding and feeding showed well.  Apologies to any wholesale butcher who may have been inadvertently disaffected as a result of the earnest thanks conveyed to the retail butchers last week.

Leading prices per kg:-  Miss C Howe’s 176.8p, 169.5p, FG Coles 156.3p, 155.7p, 154.7, 151.9p, PR & HR Vellacott 155.4p, J Field 154.4p, The Norton Farm P’ship 153.9p, 153.5p, 153.1p,  I Williams 152.9p, D Powell 152.5p, FS Major & Sons 152.3p,

Leading prices per head:-  Miss C Howe £72.50, £69, The Norton Farm P’ship £72 (twice), £70, FG Coles £70, £69, £68.50, T Patton £70, £69.50, MW Littmoden £70, Friday Street Farmers £69, £68, GN & J West £69.50, £68, JA Nightingale £68,

EWES (59)

Yet again a real humdinger, very short entry, many more needed to satisfy the demand.  There is nowhere better than Hailsham to sell your ewes.

Mrs A M Eales £94, D Christian £87, CM Crowther £83, £73, £62, FW & MJ Akehurst £74, £66, DP Ellis £70, £63, New Barn Partners £66 (twice),
LJ Poland £66, A Christian £63.50,

STORE SHEEP (35)

A surprisingly good trade when one considers the grass situation.  It surely must be better to sell now than face keeping sheep in a scorched earth situation, unless you are prepared to feed them hard.  Horton Park Farm £54.50, £47.
Next week - Wednesday, 7th July -  Special consignment of 50 Store lambs

EWES & LAMBS
Nothing like enough for the tremendous demand with grass looking short surely many sheep are best sold as couples NOW.

HAILSHAM FARMERS' PRODUCE & CRAFT MARKET

On  SATURDAY, 10th JULY

Held On Second Saturday In Every Month

9.00 ~ 12.30 At Hailsham Cattle Market

Our Mid-summer market will be showcasing seasonal fruit and vegetables and a wide variety of meat such as pork chops, sausages, bacon, beef, lamb, chicken and a good choice of game meat, for cooking either in the kitchen or on the barbeque.  We will also be promoting plenty of fresh, local produce such as cakes and pies, free range eggs, honey and wax products, delicious Organic milk straight from the cows, locally caught fish, a good selection of Sussex cheeses, annual and perennial plants, along with several of our Craft stallholders offering a variety of gifts and cards. Farmers’ Markets give you the chance to talk to the stallholders who actually produce, bake or make their products, giving you the opportunity to find out more about their production methods from start to finish. They give freely of their expertise, time and knowledge, and you will also find their prices compete favourably with the supermarkets.  Our Information Stand offers a range of leaflets on local events, produce and recipes, together with the very popular Farm Stay brochures promoting affordable holidays on farms throughout Great Britain.
