SHEEP (580) Auctioneer: Nick Young LAMBS (486) Overall average 148p per kilo Again the national and other centres were back for the third week running!! We all know the trade is not clever, however, there were some very comforting prices obtained today, in particular Christine Howe’s superb Texels and predictably FG Coles’ superb breeding and feeding showed well. Apologies to any wholesale butcher who may have been inadvertently disaffected as a result of the earnest thanks conveyed to the retail butchers last week. Leading prices per kg:- Miss C Howe’s 176.8p, 169.5p, FG Coles 156.3p, 155.7p, 154.7, 151.9p, PR & HR Vellacott 155.4p, J Field 154.4p, The Norton Farm P’ship 153.9p, 153.5p, 153.1p, I Williams 152.9p, D Powell 152.5p, FS Major & Sons 152.3p, Leading prices per head:- Miss C Howe £72.50, £69, The Norton Farm P’ship £72 (twice), £70, FG Coles £70, £69, £68.50, T Patton £70, £69.50, MW Littmoden £70, Friday Street Farmers £69, £68, GN & J West £69.50, £68, JA Nightingale £68, EWES (59) Yet again a real humdinger, very short entry, many more needed to satisfy the demand. There is nowhere better than Hailsham to sell your ewes. Mrs A M Eales £94, D Christian £87, CM Crowther £83, £73, £62, FW & MJ Akehurst £74, £66, DP Ellis £70, £63, New Barn Partners £66 (twice),
A surprisingly good trade when one considers the grass situation. It surely must be better to sell now than face keeping sheep in a scorched earth situation, unless you are prepared to feed them hard.
